	NL De Griffioen Sessies staan in het teken van de heroprichting van Mondharptrio Aubergine. Na hun succes met De Souterrain Sessies/Vergeten Paars, die in 2009 in het onderruim van een voormalige bakkerij gestalte kregen, viel voor het Zeeuwse trio onverwachts het doek. Maar dat bleek tijdelijk. Een distributeur uit Sint-Petersburg, gespecialiseerd in mondharpmuziek, haalde het trio over tot het uitgeven van een Russische editie van De Souterrain Sessies. Inmiddels ging de CD-reeks de Russische muziekhandel in als Podvalnije Sessii ofwel Kelder Sessies. Deze speciale aandacht vanuit het buitenland gaf de drie spelers een nieuwe impuls om hun muzikale verkenningstocht door de onuitputtelijke wereld van boventonen weer voort te zetten. En het resultaat is er ook naar: vijftien maal klinkende bekoring geselecteerd uit éénhonderd-en-negentien driestemmige improvisaties. De Griffioen Sessies werden in de zomer en in het najaar van 2011 in de Middelburgse wijk Griffioen op band vastgelegd. Dat verklaart de titel.	ENG The Griffin Sessions are dominated by the reestablishment of Jew’s harp Trio Aubergine. After their worldwide success with their Underground Sessions / Neglegted Purple, made in 2009 in the cellar room of an old bread-bakery, there was an unexpected stop for this trio. But for a short time. A CD-distributor in Saint Petersburg, specialized in Jew’s harp music, persuaded the Dutch players in releasing a Russian edition of their Underground Sessions. In the meanwhile the CD-series can be found on the Russian market as Podvalnije Sessii or Cellar Sessions. This special attention from abroad has given the three Jew’s harpers a new impulse to continue their musical explorations through the inexaustible world of harmonical music. The results are fifteen times sounding charms selected out of a series of 119 three-voiced improvisations. The Griffin Sessions were recorded in the summer and autumn season of 2011 in the residential 'The Griffin' in the town Middelburg in the south of the Netherlands. That is the reason for calling the CD The Griffin Sessions.
	De voorzitter van het Internationaal Mondharpgenootschap, de Oostenrijker Franz Kumpl, liet zich erover uit dat Mondharptrio Aubergine erin slaagt om binnen de stromingen van het serieel en experimenteel minimalisme, op eigen wijze een basis te geven aan iets dat hij nader omschrijft als mystiek minimalisme. Voorts trekt Kumpl parallellen met componisten als Pärt, Gubaidulina, Kancheli of Vasks. Ook plaatst hij Aubergine’s mondharpmuziek in het licht van de traditionele Oosterse derwisj-dans. Want wat voor de begeleidingsmuziek van de dansende derwisj geldt, is volgens Kumpl ook van kracht voor dit trio. Al komen de begeleidingsklanken van de derwisj-dans (sama') uit een totaal andere klanktraditie voort, Kumpl aarzelt niet eraan toe te voegen dat de mondharp voor de derwisj-choreografie evenzeer grote diensten zou kunnen bewijzen, althans als die door de Aubergine-spelers Bakx, van Elk en Filius worden bespeeld.	The President of the International Jew’s harp Society, Franz Kumpl from Vienna (Austria), wrote that Jew’s harp Trio Aubergine worked with success in serial/experimental styles of minimalism and, more specifically, that of mystic minimalism. Their works are distinguished by minimalist compositional aesthetics and a distinctly mystical subject focus. Neo-Contemplative Music might fit the style of the Jew’s harp-group Aubergine. Franz Kumpl compares their sounds to the music of Arvo Pärt, Sofia Gubaidulina, Giya Kancheli, or Pēteris Vasks. He also reminds their music unto the Sama’, the ecstatic trance-dance of a Sufi-Dervish, and what is said about the Dervish can be applied to these Jew’s harp players too. Sama' also includes the playing of instruments, and in spite of the fact that the Sama’-sound instruments were originated in other traditions, Franz Kumpl doesn’t hesitate to say that the Jew’s harp could be added to the instruments of the Dervish-dance..., at least, as they are played by Bakx, van Elk and Filius."

weidt uit over de ontwikkelingen van de mondharp in NL in de jaren negentig,
en de specifieke ontwikkelingen voor Aubergine’s eigen mondharpmuziek.

E N Q U E T E
Aan een zeventiental mensen (tussen 20 en 74 jaar) werd speciaal gevraagd, hoe zij
het geluid van de mondharp ervaren, en specifiek de mondharpmuziek van Aubergine.
Een aantal van hen had nooit eerder mondharpmuziek gehoord. Sommigen kenden het
instrument niet, en een enkele had zelfs het woord niet eerder gehoord.
Hun menigen en beoordelingen komen in het CD-boekje uitvoerig aan bod.

Op de laatste pagina van de brochure wordt stilgestaan bij het overlijden
van de Amerikaanse specialist Frederick Crane, wellicht de allergrootste documentalist

en kenner van de mondharp in al zijn aspecten en van alle tijden. 
Aan hem wordt deze CD opgedragen.

The Griffin Sessions are dedicated to Frederick Crane, the world’s initial
musicologist on Jew’s harp documentation for every culture and

for every era the instrumnet was used.
